We spoke with Josh Walshe, of Walshe’s Property and Letting Agency in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. We wanted to find out what his secret was behind the success of both being a new business and being a relatively young business owner in a highly competitive sector.
Josh has recently opened his first high street office at the age of 21, two years after founding his property business at the age of 19. He invested £250,000 into the new office in Scunthorpe.
Fixflo (F): What do you think is the most effective marketing channel to win new landlords?
Walshe (W): For me, the most effective way to grow the business has been naturally, through referrals, you then find that the quality of clients you have are much, much higher and offer such better value to the business, I would rather have 1 of my clients instead of having 5 of a company who don’t value them and who haven’t built up good long term relationships. I've offered cashback for referrals in the past, and also used social media extensively to promote new listings. These innovative ways has helped win me new landlords at the beginning of my career.
Fixflo (F): When it comes to winning new landlords, what is the biggest challenge a letting agency might face?
Walshe (W): The biggest challenge for us like any company is competition. However, we look to overcome this by offering the best service possible. We use quite a lot of technology in our company, being a relatively young business owner, this was very easy for me to get into.
Fixflo (F): Do you think you operate the agency in a different way than others? How do you view your approach to the lettings business?
Walshe (W): The main differential for us is the age of myself and my staff. We offer a unique approach (a young approach) which in some instances we agree isn’t always positive. However, 95% of the time it has been a breath of fresh air for our clients and people we work with. We appreciate all the support people have shown us over the past two years and are excited to continue our growth in the property sector.
